How to Use the Pregnancy Due Date Calculator
Enter the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) and your average cycle length. The default cycle length is 28 days, but you can adjust it between 21 and 35 days to match your personal cycle. Click Calculate to see your estimated due date, current gestational age, estimated conception date, and a table of important pregnancy milestones.
How the Due Date Calculation Works
This calculator uses Naegele's rule, which is the most widely used method for estimating pregnancy due dates. The formula adds 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of your last menstrual period. If your average cycle is different from 28 days, the calculator adjusts by adding or subtracting the difference. For example, if your cycle is 30 days, two extra days are added to the estimated due date.
Gestational age is counted from the first day of the LMP, not from the actual conception date. This means that at the time of conception (typically around two weeks after the LMP), you are already considered approximately two weeks pregnant. This convention is used by all healthcare providers and is the standard for tracking pregnancy progression.
Understanding Pregnancy Milestones
Pregnancy is divided into three trimesters, each with distinct developmental milestones. The first trimester (weeks 1-12) is when all major organs and systems begin to form. The second trimester (weeks 13-27) is often considered the most comfortable period, with visible baby growth and the onset of fetal movements. The third trimester (weeks 28-40) involves rapid weight gain, lung maturation, and preparation for delivery.
Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy
Begin taking prenatal vitamins with folic acid as early as possible, ideally before conception. Attend all scheduled prenatal appointments and screenings. Stay physically active with pregnancy-safe exercises, maintain a balanced diet rich in nutrients, stay hydrated, and get adequate rest. Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and limit caffeine intake to no more than 200 mg per day.
Track your pregnancy week by week to understand what developmental changes are occurring. This knowledge can help you prepare for upcoming appointments, recognize normal symptoms, and know when to contact your healthcare provider. Remember that every pregnancy is unique, and your experience may differ from general timelines.
