How to Use the GPA Calculator
The GPA calculator has two sections. In the Semester GPA section, enter each course name, select the letter grade you received from the dropdown menu, and type in the number of credit hours. Click the Add Course button to add more rows, up to 10 courses per semester. The semester GPA updates in real time as you fill in your courses. In the Cumulative GPA section, enter your current cumulative GPA, total credits earned so far, your new semester GPA (from the section above or entered manually), and the credits for the new semester. The calculator then shows your updated cumulative GPA.
How GPA Calculation Works
Grade Point Average is calculated by multiplying each course grade point by its credit hours to get quality points, summing all quality points, and dividing by the total credit hours. For cumulative GPA, the same principle applies across all semesters. The formula multiplies your existing cumulative GPA by your previous total credits, adds the new semester quality points, then divides by the combined total credits. This calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale where A and A+ equal 4.0, A- equals 3.7, and so on down to F at 0.0.
Tips for Managing Your GPA
- Use this calculator at the start of a semester to model different grade scenarios and set realistic targets.
- Higher credit courses have a larger impact on your GPA. Focus extra study time on courses worth more credits.
- If your cumulative GPA needs improvement, note that it becomes harder to move as you accumulate more credits. Early semesters matter most.
- Check your school's specific grade scale. Some institutions use a different point system for plus and minus grades.
Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA scale does this calculator use?
This calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale commonly used in the United States. A+ and A both equal 4.0, with each subsequent grade decreasing by 0.3 or 0.4 points down to F at 0.0.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Enter your current cumulative GPA and total credits in the second section. Then enter your new semester GPA and credits. The calculator multiplies each by its credits, sums them, and divides by total combined credits.
Can I add more than 10 courses?
The calculator supports up to 10 courses per semester. If you have more, calculate in batches or combine smaller courses.
Does this calculator include pass/fail courses?
Pass/fail courses typically do not factor into GPA calculation. Only include courses that receive letter grades.
What is a good GPA?
A GPA of 3.0 (B average) is generally considered good. A 3.5 or higher is considered very strong. Requirements vary by program, so check your institution's standards for honors, dean's list, and graduate school requirements.
